Having a limited interdisciplinary team or being located in a remote location will not limit your care provided for people living with diabetic foot and lower leg wounds. Please join Veronica Roberge as she discusses valid and reliable wound assessment tools, assessment skills and address what to do when a key interdisplinary team member is missing. This session will provide an overview of best practice recommendations for the prevention and management of diabetic foot ulcers and lower leg wounds and address diabetic foot management in indigenous populations. The session facilitates open discussion for participants to discuss local questions and concerns.

 

Veronica Roberge is a Wound Care Specialist and works as a Registered Nurse-Travel Nurse for Solutions Staffing. As a Travel Nurse she helps isolated communities as a staff nurse and additionally helps with wound care mentorship and program sustainability projects. Mrs. Roberge is a proud NSWOC member for the Indigenous WOC Health Committee.

Veronica has been working in the health care field for over 7 years and has worked in different settings: Long-Term Care, Home Care, Acute Care-Medical/Surgical and Private sector. She started her education and career as a Personal Support Worker from St. Lawrence College and continued on to complete the Registered Practical Nurse diploma from St. Lawrence College, Foot Care Nurse certificate from Foot Care Kingston, Bachelors of Science in Nursing degree from Laurentian University/St. Lawrence College, Masters in Clinical Science in Wound Healing degree from the University of Western Ontario and she is currently finishing her Nurse Specialized in Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Care (NSWOC) program. Mrs. Roberge is passionate about empowering PSWs, Nurses and management, across Canada, to deliver safe and evidence-based care.

Arlene is a registered nurse and Foot Care Nurse Educator. She has over 36 years of nursing experience, including her work at Hotel Dieu Hospital (Windsor, ON) in gerontology, medical surgical, orthopedics, emergency, and outpatient day surgery. In August of 2016 Arlene accepted an early retirement package and is now focused solely on her business as well as teaching. With encouragement from family, friends and other health care professionals, she founded Healthy Heels and More Inc. in Windsor.

​FACILITATOR Diabetic Foot Care: BRETTE CAIN R.P.N.

​

I started my career in health care as a Personal Support Worker (PSW) when I received my PSW Certificate in 2013 from Confederation College. Upon completion of the program, I started working at Atikokan General Hospital in Extended Care as a PSW. Later that year, I enrolled in the Practical Nursing Program at Confederation College and graduated, receiving my diploma with honors and obtaining my nursing license in 2015. I continue to work at the Atikokan General Hospital as an RPN on the Acute Care Unit and Extended Care Unit. As of July 2016, I received my Certificate of Completion for the Foot Care Nurse Program, specializing in Basic, Advanced, and Diabetic Foot Care.

Cindy Lazenby, Lead Author of Art and Science of Foot Care: A Clinical Resource for Nurses in Canada has an extensive history of providing nursing foot care education and advocating for improvements in nursing foot care in Canada. In addition to being an author and Foot Care Nurse Educator, she is the Owner and Director of Foot Canada Training. Cindy is a founding contributor, and the first chair of the CAFCN (Canadian Association of Foot Care Nurses), which aims to standardize best practices across the nation. 

 

Cindy is passionate about education and committed to using this as a tool to support informed, effective, and consistent practices for nursing foot care in Canada.
